#DIGC101 - Week 9 Blog - Flickr

I’ll admit to being wrong about Flickr. I initially dismissed it as another image hosting site, similar to photobucket, imageshare or even twitpic. What I did learn is that the idea of photosharing has melded with social networking to create a very interactive take on viewing photos.

After initially searching for things based around my 5 word review web project I found myself stumbling through 1000’s of images that weren’t particularly relevant. Not wanting to be discouraged from the lesson, I instead started searching for images related to Jack Kerouac, as I finished reading his autobiography, The Vanity of Duluoz, the night before.

Searching through the images through text and tags brought a number of different results. The primary difference being that pictures of Jack Kerouac and his books would come up under texts, but places and scenes would show up under tags.

The interesting feature of flickr is derived from an algorythm that works generates an images interestingness through number of views, favourites, comments etc. It is basically a popularity generator that relies on user feedback.

I’ve been greatly impressed by Flickr and have even added some photos from a visit to Los Angeles from a few years back. In the long term I would like to add more photos and tag them accordingly, but for now this is a very arduous task. However, like most things, Flickr works best when more information is contributed and serves to make the work worthwhile.

My Flickr work can be found here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/42743641@N07/

I have set up my own sets as well as galleries and favourites for a bit of fun.

Hopefully this can be expanded upon over the next few weeks.

Postscript: I have since received a message from the owner of a picture I added to my Kerouac gallery. This is evidence of Flickr’s use of social networking and has made this website a new favourite.
